ISO 4406 & 4407 are standards published by the International Organization for Standardization (ISO) which relate to the contamination of hydraulic fluids by solid particulates. ISO 4406 defines the method used for coding the contamination and specifies that the sample must be analyzed according to ISO 4407. ISO 4407 outlines the method used to prepare samples, and the procedure used to determine the level of contamination. The method required is particulate counting by optical microscopy and the use of a motorized stage is highly recommended. In these standards, the differentiation between “regular” particulates and fibres is required. For more information on the standard Iso 4406 and ISO 4407 itself please refer to ISO.org website.
