Automated Sample Handling

Automated sample handling systems load and exchange many specimen slides into a microscope without an operator present, so a lab can scan a large batch of samples in a single unattended run. Clemex supplies the Märzhäuser SlideExpress, a robotic slide loader that combines a base unit with an integrated motorized scanning stage to bring slides to the microscope one at a time for walk-away, high-throughput imaging.

Märzhäuser ScanExpress automated scanning system

Walk-away, high-throughput scanning

SlideExpress holds up to 120 slides across three magazines and transfers them one at a time to an integrated high-performance scanning stage for imaging. An innovative clip concept moves each slide between magazine and stage in a single gentle motion, reducing the risk of sample loss or damage and saving time. Integrated measuring systems monitor position in all axes, and the magazines use locking mechanisms and protected, shakeproof construction for safe handling.

The system accepts standard 76 × 52 × 1 mm and 76 × 26 × 1 mm slides. Options include a barcode scanner for sample tracking and the Märzhäuser Liquid Dispenser for automatically applying immersion medium on upright light microscopes — so even oil-immersion scanning can run unattended.

Frequently Asked Questions

What is automated sample handling?

A system that automatically loads and exchanges specimen slides into the microscope, so a large batch can be scanned in one unattended, walk-away run.

How many slides can SlideExpress hold?

Up to 120 slides, held across three magazines and transferred to the scanning stage one at a time.

What slide sizes does it accept?

Standard 76 × 52 × 1 mm and 76 × 26 × 1 mm microscope slides.

How are slides moved into the microscope?

A clip-based mechanism transfers each slide between the magazine and the integrated scanning stage in a single gentle motion, reducing handling risk.

Can it apply immersion oil and track samples automatically?

Yes. An optional liquid dispenser applies immersion medium for oil-immersion imaging on upright microscopes, and an optional barcode scanner identifies and tracks slides.
